HOW TO PREP YOUR CAR FOR A SPRING ROAD TRIP
As the winter months come to an end and temperatures begin to rise to that cozy spring warmth, the desire for a fun road trip may come to mind. But before you start packing your bags, you’ll need to get your car spring-ready. Our experts have devised a car trip prep list of touch-ups that you can do right at home, without necessarily needing to bring your car to an auto shop. Follow these simple steps that’ll have your car ready to hit the road in no time.
STEP 1: ENGINE PREP
- Your engine fluids will need to be checked to ensure they’re full. Inspect each dipstick and fill line. The owner’s manual, or even the internet, can tell you where the fluids are stored, if you’re unsure of where to find them.
- The fluids are typically tended to any time your car is brought to an auto shop for service, and usually last in between appointments, but it’s a good idea to periodically check them yourself, too. Windscreen fluid usually runs out faster than the other fluids, especially if you live in a wet and snowy climate.
- Inspect the belts and hoses. Pull on the belts to ensure they’re not loose, and if they are, have them checked by a mechanic. While your engine is warm, give the radiator hoses a gentle squeeze to check if they are too soft or not. If so, they may need to be replaced.
- Cold weather can affect your spark plug performance, so it’s always a good idea to inspect them after winter and replace them if needed.
STEP 2: EXTERIOR PREP
- Inspect your windscreen wiper blades. Overuse on snow and sleet can wear them out, and should be replaced every spring.
- Look for any signs of rust on your paint, and treat it immediately.
- Check the tyre pressure to ensure it meets the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Finally, conclude with a car wash to rinse away winter dirt and salt, and a fresh coat of wax. You and your car are ready for spring!
